I finally got fed up with the housing and replaced it with thin ply board. I attached the sliders to the ply board and the dooor, et voila, a sliding door. With the benefit of writing this post at least 5 months after the fact I can tell you this is still how the door is configured, but not for long, I have fallen out of love with it. Stay tuned.
